Basements
A tremendous amount of cold air is drawn into the house through the basement where the house sits on the foundation and through penetrations for dryer vents and electrical services.
While flexible caulking designed to adhere to concrete and expanding foam can substantially reduce the cold air leaking into the basement in some cases spray-on foam may be the most efficient option.
Spray-on foam must be applied by a contractor certified to use it for controlling air leakage. It’s mixed on site and sprayed directly on a surface or into a cavity where it expands into place and sets within seconds. These contractors are certified to use medium density spray-on polyurethane foam to control air leakage.
