Dual Flush and Composting Toilets

High Efficiency Dual Flush Toilets

Old standard toilets use 13-20L of water per flush. Compare this to the new High Efficiency Toilet (HET) standard that defines a HET fixture as one that flushes at 20 percent below the 6L per flush (lpf) maximum!

When low-flow toilets were introduced, stories of double flushing and clogging were widespread. But today’s models have improved dramatically, and homeowner satisfaction has improved with them. Today, 23 different toilet manufacturers are marketing over 200 such models of fixtures.

Designed for light and heavy flushes, dual-flush toilets tend to average less than 4.5 lpf (HET criteria for dual-flush toilets identifies the effective flush volume as the average of one high flush and two low flushes). Dual flush models are available from many well-known manufacturers with light flush capacities from 3 to 4L and heavy flush capacities from 5 to 6L. These toilets typically operate with a handle that can move up or down, or a two button system. One direction or button will activate the lower flow flush, while the other will activate the higher flow flush.

Composting Toilets

If you haven’t given much thought about where sewage goes after flushing, the thought of composting your own waste might be a little, uh… distasteful. On the other hand, most of us are fairly comfortable with the notion of piping water over long distances, treating it, and then using 40% of this treated water to flush away a small quantity of human byproducts.

In light of our dwindling supplies of fresh water, and dwindling supplies of energy needed to manage this water, it may be time to reconsider which is the more desirable of the two options.

Banish the thought of the stinky old outhouse toilet. Composting toilets effectively treat human “waste” to produce a useable end-product that is a valuable soil additive. They use little or no water, are not connected to expensive sewage systems, and cause no environmental damage.

There are two types of systems:

Batch Systems

With the batch systems, a container is filled and then replaced with an empty container. The composting process is completed inside the sealed container. It can consist of a single, replaceable container, or a carousel system where containers are rotated into the toilet area when the other is full.

Continual Process Systems

These systems are in a constant state of composting. Waste enters the system, composting reduces the volume and moves it downward where it is harvested after 6-12 months as fully composted material.

Benefits of Composting Toilets

20-50% reduction in water use.

Lowered costs for sewage and water service/septic tank maintenance.

Turns “waste” into a resource.

In addition to being great for home use, are also perfect for applications that would not be able to accommodate other systems including sites that are rocky, have a high water table, or are environmentally sensitive.
