In terms of combating global warming with our vehicles, we can begin by driving less, carpooling with our neighbors and colleagues, and not taking so many trips. Where we live is key – if you live in town, you would rarely have to use your vehicle whereas outside of town there are two lengthy drives each day. If you must drive, then choose a fuel efficient vehicle, about which you can learn about in this section.
The best way to warm up your car is in fact not to idle it, but to drive it. With today’s engines, you need no more than 30 seconds of idling on winter days before you drive it. Besides traffic, if you will be sitting idle for more than 10 seconds, it is more fuel efficient to shut off the engine than it is to idle.
