RETScreen is a useful tool that determines energy production and savings, life-cycle costs, emission reductions, financial feasibility and risk for various types of renewable energy technologies (RET) including solar. It is a free software that can be downloaded at http://www.retscreen.net.

If you are considering installing photovoltaic solar panels to produce electricity for your home or farm, you will need to take the following into consideration:

• Is your home as energy efficient as possible? If you are over-consuming electricity due to inefficient appliances or wasted kilowatt hours, solar power will not be economically viable.

• Does your roof or side of house face south?

• Is the south facing side of the house partially blocked by trees or hills?

• How much electricity are you looking to produce? The size and quantity of the solar panels depend on whether you wish to offset your electricity costs or power your entire house. You must determine the wattage you will require (watt-hour per day)

By assessing your needs, you will have a rough idea on how big of a system you will require. Please see Appendix A on page 40 of Photovoltaic Systems: A Buyers Guide [PDF format] by the Canadian Renewable Energy Network from Natural Resources Canada.

BulletWind

Small Wind Manufacturer | Large Wind Manufacturer | Small Scale (Residential) suppliers | High end of Small Scale

If you are considering installing a wind turbine to produce electricity for your home or farm, you will need to take the following into consideration:

• Is it windy on your property?

• Do you have at least 1 acre of property?

• Do local zoning regulations allow wind turbines?

• Are you comfortable making such a long-term investment?

• Is there enough space to have the wind turbine approximately 300 meters away from your neighbors’ house?

If you have answered ‘yes’ to each question, it is time to get in contact with an Wind Energy provider.

BulletMicro-Hydro

Does your property have a source of running water? A stream behind your house or spring on the hill? If the water source has usable head (the vertical distance the water falls) and enough flow (the amount of water), you may benefit from the installation of a micro hydro generator. In order to determine the answers to these questions, a site assessment may be required. You can contact a water power provider to assess your site.

All Things Efficient have listed products, manufacturers and suppliers of Micro Hydro turbines.

The best thing we can do in the fight against global warming is reduce our demand for electricity. Electricity not only comes from a polluting source such as coal or refining oil, it is not very efficient in terms of the distance it travels from the power plant to your home. In this section, you will learn about four different ways you can either go off-grid or contribute to the grid and overall reducing the energy demand in your home.
You can connect your excess green power to the grid in a process called Net Metering. If you produce more electricity than you consume from a green source listed below, NB Power will credit your monthly bill based on how much electricity you have supplied to the grid. For more information, please contact NB Power.
